The Stories That Make Up the Big Picture: Dell’s Women in Tech
Over the past few years, we’ve worked closely with Dell and their Employer Brand team to find great stories and create content to show what it’s really like to work for Dell within a diverse array of different talent and background groups, such as interns and veterans. I loved being a part of those projects, and was excited for another opportunity. When I found out the newest niche we’d be working with, I was over-the-top pumped…
…finding great stories from women in technology within Dell!
In my past professional life, I was a woman in tech; I started my career in voice and data infrastructure. I know what it’s like to be the only woman in a class or on a team; it wasn’t that long ago. To now have a front row seat to seeing a tech giant like Dell investing in women, and asking them to share their stories filled me with hope and joy. That Stories Inc. could contribute to lifting other women up felt so empowering and important, especially in an age where only 26% of professional tech and computing jobs are filled by women.
The Spotlight on Dell’s Women in Tech
We spoke with 21 women in Dell’s Santa Clara offices to get specific stories about their experience in the workforce. We filmed for two days in sunny California, and our entire team left each day feeling inspired by the group of women Dell introduced us to.
From the Vice President of Talent Acquisition, an expert on mentoring, to a woman who used to design roller coasters on Walt Disney’s drafting table, we met some really fascinating people. Then, it was up to us to cull through and consider all the great stories we heard. We are always thinking like potential candidates. Selecting what content to ultimately use and produce felt like an impossible task when there was so much good stuff to choose from.
In the end, we wrote four blog posts, produced four videos and delivered a digital photo library of more than 800 high-res images for Dell’s women in tech series.
Shining the Spotlight on Women
One of the coolest stories we uncovered was that of Rachel and Mariah. Rachel, a PhD in mathematics, wished Dell published their novel research. Mariah, a software engineer, knew she could help Rachel spread the word. Mariah mocked up a website where Rachel could share her research, and together they secured funding from their VP to start publishing it.
Not only that, Rachel also started creating videos to teach math in an approachable way, sharing her expertise with the masses. All of this work was outside the scope of their day-to-day workload.
According to Glassdoor, breaking into the tech industry is desirable, and yet, a challenge for candidates who don’t have the technology experience. We met Jazzmin, who had no prior technology experience and yet, Dell hired her for Inside Sales. She had worked in the restaurant industry and showed that she had the soft skills necessary to provide excellent service to Dell’s clients.
With the right training to bring her up to speed on the tech knowledge, Jazzmin has thrived in her newly chosen career and has since been recognized as a top performer in Sales.
These are just two of the empowering stories we heard from a handful of the women working at Dell. We know that there’s many more where they came from and that there will be more to come as more women in technology are fostered and supported in the community that Dell has built.
